Poliquin dismisses seniors with health care questions as ‘socialists’ in league with Pelosi

This week, Maine’s 2nd District Congressman, Republican Bruce Poliquin, caught heat for gracelessly ducking out of a senior citizens facility in Bangor after being asked repeatedly by residents and guests to account for his callous, dishonest vote back in May to repeal the Affordable Care Act, allow states to deny people health insurance based on pre-existing conditions and devastate the Medicaid program in order to cut taxes on the richest of the rich in the United States.

Poliquin, reeling from a week of bad press for essentially running away from his constituents when they asked him why he voted for a bill that would have the potential to bankrupt or kill thousands of them, has tried to use his official campaign Facebook page attack those angry about his vote for the House Republican healthcare bill, titled the “American Health Care Act,” or AHCA, as socialists in cahoots with the Maine People’s Alliance or shills of Democratic Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, when in fact the bill that he voted for is opposed by a stunning 92% of Americans according to polling from the end of May. For him to lay opposition that he encounters here at home for a bill that ludicrously unpopular at the feet of House Democrats or progressive activists is nothing short of delusional.

Of course, Poliquin can genuinely claim that he has come across only a few opponents of the bill in his district, but that is only because he he has held virtually no public events in which he would actually hear from the people that he is paid to represent. Constituents literally had to drive down to Boston a few weeks ago to a regional business lobby event to try to get face time with the Congressman. He has held no town halls in the run-up to the AHCA vote or in the months since. He hides from us, and then lashes out at us when we try to find him.

(Poliquin’s post, by the way, was immediately flooded with comments critical of his vote, many of which have apparently since been deleted)

Even Maine’s Republican Senator, Susan Collins, has recognized how insanely bad this bill and even the half-hearted Senate Republican attempts to water down the worst parts of the bill would be for Mainers here in the Second District (or anywhere, honestly). Is Susan Collins also colluding with the Maine People’s Alliance, Rep. Poliquin?

The fact is that as long as Rep. Poliquin makes himself completely inaccessible to his constituents, only the most organized, determined, or lucky of us will actually get an opportunity to ask him to his face how he can sleep at night lying to us, running from us, and voting against our obvious interests. Poliquin’s strategy is to try to use his inaccessibility as some warped justification to discredit the people who actually get through to him, seemingly saying that if someone has been able to navigate all of the barriers to interacting with him, then they must be paid plants or some other brand of undesirable.

But as long as he keeps hiding, his voters will keep trying to find him. Our lives and livelihoods depend on it.
