Democrat Troy Jackson holds a narrow lead over Republican U.S. Sen. Susan Collins in a new poll of likely Maine voters that also found broad support for government action to make childcare more affordable.
The survey, conducted by the Maine People’s Resource Center and released by the Maine People’s Alliance (of which Beacon is a project), found Jackson with 49.3% support compared with 46.5% for Collins, while 4.2% of voters were undecided. The 2.8-point difference falls within the poll’s 3.8-point margin of error.
The poll also found strong support for policies aimed at helping families afford childcare. Eighty-one percent of respondents said they support government action to ensure Maine families have access to affordable, high-quality childcare.
“We need good, affordable childcare in our communities for people to be able to work – period,” said Crystal Parritt, director of childcare services for YWCA Central Maine. “Without government support, we struggle to keep our services affordable.”
Support was also widespread for federal regulation of artificial intelligence, with 67% of respondents backing government regulation of AI development. Among voters who strongly supported such regulations, Jackson led Collins 71% to 24%.
The survey also found Jackson ahead among independent voters, 58% to 33%, while Collins had a 57% unfavorable rating. The poll surveyed 684 likely Maine voters from Sept. 25 through Sept. 29.
